Originally from the Jersey Shore, I have been living and maintaining a studio in Semora, N.C. since 1980. I find living in the rural setting very peaceful, inspirational and satisfying.
Having taught for more than 35 years in high school and college, I now spend the majority of my time in the studio. My dog Molly seems to enjoy the whole pottery process from the spinning of the wheel to the reduction firing.
I especially enjoy the challenge of large wheel-thrown forms and the spontaneity of raku firing. I often make the tops very small or even enclosed to emphasize the aesthetic value over function. Each glaze is "made from scratch" as are the raku and wood burning kilns I use to fire my work.
For a change of pace I sometimes create "face pots" or "potheads". These are waterproof and can be used as vases. The outside is left unglazed or brushed with iron oxide, while the inside has a white stoneware glaze. I do not try to make these look like anyone in particular, but often people will find one that reminds them of someone they know.

INFLUENCES

I studied pottery under Dr. David Diller from 1968-1975 at James Madison University. He was trained, along with Toshiko Takaezu, at Cranbrook Academy of Art under Maija Grotell. Their works and those by Gertrude and Otto Natzler motivated me to throw on the wheel and strive for unique and pleasing forms and glazes .
